O segundo nome é o de Pier Giorgio Frassati, que é figura mais próxima do nosso tempo (morreu, de facto, em 1925) e que nos mostra ao vivo o que significa verdadeiramente para um jovem leigo dar uma resposta concreta ao “Vem e segue-me”. Basta passar os olhos, mesmo que rapidamente, pela sua vida gasta no espaço de apenas vinte e quatro, anos, para compreender qual foi a resposta que Pier Giorgio soube dar a Jesus Cristo: a resposta de um jovem “moderno”, aberto aos problemas da cultura, do desporto (um valente alpinista), às questões sociais, aos verdadeiros valores da vida e, ao mesmo tempo, de um homem profundamente crente, nutrido pela mensagem evangélica, de carácter solidíssimo, apaixonado em servir os irmãos e ardendo num fogo de caridade que o levava a aproximar, segundo uma ordem de precedência absoluta, os pobres e os doentes.
2. Porquê, falando-vos agora, quis tomar por exemplo estas duas figuras? Porque elas servem para demonstrar, num certo sentido sob dois lados diferentes, aquilo que é essencial para a visão cristã do homem. Um e outro — Don Bosco como verdadeiro educador cristão e Pier Giorgio como verdadeiro jovem cristão — nos indicam que o que mais conta nessa visão é a pessoa e a sua vocação tal como foi estabeleci da por Deus. Vós já sabeis bem que, da minha parte, é frequente esta chamada de atenção para a pessoa, porque se trata verdadeiramente de um dado fundamental de que nunca se poderá prescindir; e, ao dizer pessoa, não pretendo fazer um discurso de um humanismo autónomo e circunscrito à realidade desta terra. O homem — é bom recordá-lo — tem em si mesmo um valor imenso, mas não o tem por si mesmo porque o recebeu de Deus, por quem foi criado “à sua imagem e semelhança” (Gén 1, 26-27). E não existe, além desta, mais nenhuma adequada definição de homem! Este valor é como um “talento” e, segundo o ensino da conhecida parábola (Mt25, 14-30), deve ser bem administrado, isto é, este valor de ser homem, de ser pessoa, deve ser administrado de modo que frutifique em abundância. É esta, ó jovens, a visão cristã do homem, a qual, partindo de Deus criador e pai, faz descobrir a pessoa naquilo que é e naquilo que deve ser.
